My computer is a craptop

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

I’m getting a new computer at work soon.  Which means I should probably move all my files and stuff off of my hardrive and onto my folder on the network.  Bah.  I don’t like using my network folder to store stuff, since then I don’t have it when I’m traveling or otherwise away from work.  But I guess that it’s only a temporary thing while I’m switching systems, and as soon as the new one is in place, I can revert to keeping everything on my own drives again.  That’s a good thing.

It’s a good thing I’m getting a new computer, too.  The one I have now is about 3 years old, and has all sorts of problems.  It’s a laptop, and the battery is completely dead - I get about 10 minutes on what should be a full charge.  Also, the CD/DVD drive is shot - I can’t read discs, much less burn them.  And then, every so often, when I’m using it as a laptop (not docked at my desk), the screen just doesn’t light up.  The content is there, though.  If I get close and squint, it’s kind of like reading in the dark.

They were supposed to order it today.  They ordered another one for some new girl who starts Monday, so I guess the plan is for them both to be here before then.

Uh-huh…

Homecoming

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

This past Wednesday night, Seth left on a Special Olympics trip he was chaperoning. I’ve missed him a bunch, but he just got home.

Our plans for tomorrow involve sleeping late, lazing around, and watching Grey’s Anatomy. No real plans to speak of, really.

I’ve been following Urban Giraffe’s directions for installing WordPress on your local machine so that I can mess around with making my own templates without screwing anything up beyond repair here on the real site or using up my own bandwidth until I have everything the way I want it. Downloading and installing Apache and MySQL went okay, but when I tested the mod_rewrite function by creating an .htaccess file (just as he directed), it didn’t work. The test.php address returns a 404 page, no matter what. Looking through the comments, I tried all the stuff mentioned (at least, I think I did - some of this stuff is above my head). When I pinged local.theoffwhites.com, I got 127.0.0.1, so that’s not the problem. I have the .htaccess file in the root (again - I think I do, anyway).

Maybe tomorrow Seth and I can look at it together and figure it out, if we get around to it.

Hello world!

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Ahh, the ubiquitous WordPress first post. Hello world, indeed.

Seth and I decided to buy a new domain and hosting to go with it. As we march steadily down the path of geekery, it’s only natural that we pick up new stuff on the way. So, our new homepage is now http://theoffwhites.com/. There isn’t much just now, but then again, we just set it up last night. We chose Dreamhost to host the site - they offer lots of storage, bandwidth, and extras. This blog, for instance. I’ve started on Blogger, then moved to Typepad. I always thought I’d like to install and maintain Moveable Type someday, but Dreamhost offered one-click installation of Wordpress (well, it was a few more clicks than one, but it was still super-easy), so here we are. I’ll probably still try to install MT someday, but for now, WP is looking better and better.

Spoiler

Gah!  I’ve been good, saving up last week’s Project Runway to watch at the same time as this weeks, once we have time to watch it.  I avoided all of my favorite tv gossip sites in order to not know who wins, and then, one of the knitblogs I read (not even one of my favorites) goes and spoils it for me.  Not that I’m going to spoil here, though.  If you haven’t seen it yet and plan to, you’ll get nothing out of me!

On the other hand, though, I guess that means that I can go ahead and read those tv gossip sites.

Socks

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

Yesterday, Seth’s student loan disbursement check finally came in.  It was a little more than we had expected, and we decided to spend a little of it on some fun stuff before we threw the rest into our emergency fund (I’m still working on creating that, Mom, and then I promise we’ll start a retirement fund).  Seth got Mario Kart for his new-to-him DS, and me?  I got yarn.

Strpebblebeach_1 Strlapis_1I ordered two colorways of Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks That Rock, ⇐ Pebble Beach and Lapis ⇒.

Grumperina’s assessment of the yarn is pretty complimentary, and she seems to know what she’s talking about, especially when it comes to socks.

Right now I’m working on two pairs of socks.  The first, from Nancy Bush’s Knitting Vintage Socks (can’t remember the pattern just now, sorry) is for my brother-in-law.  He requested wool socks to keep his feet warm while he bikes to school.  I’m making them from some Lion Brand Woolease Sportweight in Blue Mist, a dark blue-green heathery color (hmm…hadn’t realized they were discontinuing that yarn.  Probably why I got it on sale, though, huh?).  They’re really think, since I’m making them on 2s.  I’m just concerned they’ll be too small for him.  On the other hand, if they are too small, I’ll keep them as slipper socks, and make a different pair for him for next winter (this one is quickly fading, after all).

The other pair I just started last night, bored with the pair above.  I dug out some  Sockotta yarn in an old colorway, and cast on. I began playing with what sort of ribbing pattern I wanted, finally figured it out, and then decided it would be really cool to implement it at the very beginning of the toe instead of waiting until all the increases were finished.  So, of course, off the needles it came, unravelling into a curly mess, and I started again. As soon as I had knit one round plain, I jumped into the ribbing.  I’m pretty happy with it - it’s not a regular pattern at all, although there is a sense to it.  So far, it looks really nice.  Even Seth was impressed - and I had to drag his attention away from his new game to get him to look at it.  No photo for now, but I’ll take and post some later tonight.
